The delicious dessert platter

The next time you visit San Diego with the kids, make sure to book your reservations for the Sunday brunch at Humphreys by the Bay Restaurant. Located on the postcard-perfect Shelter Island strand, just across the bay from downtown San Diego, this is an especially excellent destination for the whole family. The well-balanced and scrumptious food display is enhanced by the bayfront view, so kids, and kids-at-heart, enjoy watching the sailboats and yachts in action through the glass wall. Humphreys by the Bay also offers a standout dessert table with a Ben and Jerry’s ice cream bar, and is situated on a waterfront walkway that leads to a playground. Check the website for specials because sometimes the restaurant offers deals such as allowing kids to eat for free!

My family enjoyed this brunch on a crisp November morning, beginning with freshly squeezed orange juice and French Roast for my husband and myself. Although we had no wait before entering the brunch, the kids were still given a “hospitality kit” with crayons, a page of coloring, a word search, and other fun activities for them. The kit offset any boredom lulls that may have crept in for the kids.

The brunch offered traditional family favorites including Belgian waffles, eggs benedict, fontanini sausage, and apple wood smoked bacon. As sometimes the more sophisticated brunches skip these important staples, the pickier, younger eaters sometimes do not fare so well during the meal. For instance, The Rancho Bernardo Inn Thanksgiving brunch skipped many of these items and my younger eaters did not eat as well as they did here at Humphrey’s. For the more enlightened younger eaters as well as the adults, the seafood table with cracked crab claws, smoked salmon, sushi and fixings, shrimp, and oysters in the shell was very inviting. I especially enjoyed the roast, the salads, and the cheese platter with all of the varietals including brie, blue cheese, cheddar, sage derby, and pepper jack.

While virtually all Sunday brunches offer a dessert table, not all can boast an ice cream station, which is especially desirable to the kids. My kids loved selecting their Ben and Jerry’s ice cream and adding all the fixings—chocolate and caramel sauces, nuts, sprinkles. Many other delicacies graced the dessert table including bread pudding, cheesecake, pecan pie, red velvet cake, and chocolate (both white and dark) dipped strawberries.

After the meal, my kids enjoyed strolling along the restaurant decks, taking in the yachts and sailboats hitched in the restaurant’s private marina. In San Diego, even November is cool but sunny. My family also enjoyed the wall display of the entertainers who have appeared at Humphrey’s including Ray Charles and Bill Cosby. We strolled down the walkway outside the restaurant where we could view downtown San Diego across the bay as well as the Coronado Bay bridge. My kids enjoyed the water-front playground just a short stroll down the strand, which was a nice conclusion to the meal.

Besides the brunch, Humphreys by the Bay is hailed for its daily live music. Every day, excluding holidays, Humphreys offers a happy hour, 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm which accompanies the impressive and changing-daily music schedule. The live stage is perched near the bay so viewers can enjoy the bay behind the live performers. December, for instance, sometimes offers a diversity of musicians ranging from the Blues Buick Wilson Band, Reggae with Lloyd Hemmings, a Billy Joel tribute, and a disco dancing night with Makai.

The regular meal schedule at Humphreys by the Bay is as follows: Breakfast: Monday—Friday, 6:30 am —11:00 am; Saturday, 7:00 am—11:00 am; Sunday, 7:00 am to 9:00 am. Lunch: Monday—Saturday, 11:00—2:00; Dinner: Sun.—Thursday, 5:30—9:00 pm and Friday—Saturday, 5:30—10:00 pm.

The illustrious brunch is served every Sunday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Reservations are recommended. Adults are $39.95 and, as mentioned, kids now eat free. Normally, kids are $16.00 per child (ages 4-12). For a reliable, delicious and now affordable experience for the family, with an authentic San Diego feel, don’t miss Humphreys by the Bay brunch in Pt. Loma’s Shelter Island.
