Clay’s La Jolla Restaurant
Clay’s La Jolla offers progressive and creative Californian Cuisine in a penthouse environment with panoramic views of La Jolla and the Pacific Ocean. This restaurant is located in the sky lounge of Hotel La Jolla and the food is unquestionably superb. Chef Clay Bordan draws upon natural, organic meats, wild-caught seafood, and daily-delivered local produce. Beyond this, his artistic arrangement of the food makes this a truly memorable culinary experience.
Eye-pleasing and mouth-watering food I came here with my husband and four kids, ages 8, 7, and 5 year-old twins. Although there is not a child’s menu per se, my kids all found something to order, and were pleased with the innovative display of their foods. My daughters ordered grilled cheese sandwiches that arrived shaped in circles. I had the shrimp salad with goat cheese, which was the best salad of this type I have had to date, with the shrimp exuding hints of garlic and rosemary, and the delicate goat cheese enhancing all of the other salad flavors.
Everyone enjoys a great view, and this one is among the best with its up-in-the-clouds perspective of the La Jolla shores. At night, Clay’s is often booked, and the restaurant receives anywhere from 10 to 50 kids a night, infants to age 12. Many of the local La Jolla schools come to this restaurant for events as well. Even though Clay’s La Jolla does not have a kid’s menu, Clay explains that they do customize a lot for kids, making special pastas, chicken strips, and sandwiches, as requested by the younger customers.
Many families flock to Clay’s for the happy hour menu which offers a more affordable family meal, while still allowing families to enjoy the ocean view environment and great quality food. The happy hour menu is virtually the same as the regular one, but at reduced prices with smaller portions. For instance, the pan seared sea scallops are $16.95 on the regular menu, and $8.50 on the happy hour menu; Clay’s signature Coconut Kataify Tiger Prawns are $15.95, regular menu, and $8.00, happy hour menu; Tenderloin tips are $15.95 regular, and $8.00 during happy hour. Happy hour runs 4-7 daily and there is live entertainment Tuesday through Sunday.
Clay's amazing view Clay’s menu changes at least three times a year. While many restaurant owners are hurting in these economic times, cutting back on menu items, Clay is instead adding to his menu. There is no lack of culinary diversity or quality here. I recommend taking the family here for a fascinating and delicious food experience with a fabulous view! ![]() |
