The San Diego Wildfires darkened my neighborhood's sky and threatened our homes.

When the California wildfires blazed throughout several counties, including San Diego, in late October, 2003, reporters called this event the worst catastrophe to ever hit the state. These fires directly affected my family, and although our home remained, we evacuated the scene. Like many evacuees, our refuge became the La Costa Resort and Spa, a beautiful resort featured in this site, and located in north coastal San Diego County. This resort opened its doors to over 30 families fleeing the fires, offering a complimentary night stay during the worst night of the fire, and reduced rates for evenings thereafter.
